We're starting up at #govcamp
Andreas Krebs starts up at #govcamp, talking about who we are
We want to talk about how to better connect constituents with their elected reps
Our first report found that MPs were accidental citizens, many
were asked to run and though they were community leaders they were not life long politicians
Second, MPs received little training and had to dive right in
MPs also gave us no consistent definition of their job
Andreas explaining our most recent report which found that many MPs were discouraged with the way the party system in Canada functions
Our next report details the best practices and advice MPs gave us
only a few MPs we talked to had a systematic approach to connect with constituents #govcamp
no one that we talked to used technology to connect with constituents #govcamp
Andreas throws out a few points for discussion, first have we seen any web based applications before that connect MPs with constituents
What are the constituent needs?
What do the representative's need? #govcamp
What kind of user interace would work #govcamp?
How should information be aggregated?
@ScottSnowden says every company in the private sector has a CRM: customer relationship management, the public sector should too #govcamp
Another thought: One of the reasons Obama won was due to his CRM #govcamp
Another thought: What about the privacy of the data, a big concern in the public sector #govcamp
What if the newly elected MP doesn't want to hand over data #govcamp
We need to decide who the steward of the system is.
The party already does this but the MP not so much
Another thought: Instead of top down reporting what about bottom up, each community or resident should report to representatives, this could then bubble up to representatives #govcamp
Can this system cross political levels - shouldn't be attached to a specific representative but to regions
This means that huge cooperation between levels of government would be needed, but not much faith #govcamp
Perhaps government can't do this given the scope, private, non-profit, arms length org. would be better #govcamp
We can have these tools but how do we train staff to manage and understand this information
What about sectors of society who have no access to technology
Are we trying to create Rousseau's general will for web 2.0?
There is a disconnect between the capacity of government and what people demand. People are going to MPs about potholes when they should be going to municipal MPs.
What about language barriers?
One response: we can try to reach lots of people but we can't remove barriers completely
not only can people talk about problems but contribute solutions
That's it, thanks for joining us.
