We've create a new generation of serfs. And it's intergenerational now. Worst record of social mobility in any developed nation.
There's something wrong with the AngloSaxon rhetoric. It's just not true.
As a radical Tory, Blond opposes this.
Coupled with this "rather unpleasant" economic picture, huge social collapse. In the 1970s, the weakest communities were stronger than weakest communities today.
Huge rupture in trust, increased lonliness. Trust has halved since 1950s.
He's now on to solutions.
(audible sigh from those sitting beside me)
Welfare state overhaul needed. State spent billions to marginally remove a few ppl from poverty. Little willingness to address this.
Welfare is captured by the middle class - eg pension tax relief, tax relief if you own a home. And don't get him started on corporate tax relief
Make welfare not income buy capital. Tax less and give more to those who need it. Create a distributive, not redistributive state
Only gvt is a monopoly. We've produced a society where Adam Smith's "two merchants" ca. Band together. We bought into the Chicago School, and got the economics wrong
Regulations biased against small business. We've got to radically change market and business model
State needs to be reintroduced, give those at the bottom assets and capital. Mass mutualization on public sector workers, who are currently kept in place by bureaucracy
(this means employee ownership)
What about those at the bottom? He argues citizens should take over the budgets spent on them. UK gvt has agreed.
People should be able to buy community assets.
Make the state a way to create capital effects for the poor
Other examples: open up gvt procurement to social enterprises. Ppl can run businesses through the state. New model for bottom up prosperity.
Another idea: prisoner rehabilitation impact bonds. People take care of prisoners, reoffenses go down. Less expense on prisons.
(there are good write ups on the prisoner social impact boss. Please post if you're reading and can find info. It's a good illustration of Blond's point)
People have to deliver for themselves. That is he "Big Society"
